Mr. Coffee machines are simple, which is why people keep them for years. But simple machines still build up scale and stale coffee residue.
Mr. Coffee's own cleaning guidance often points people toward vinegar and water. That can work for mineral deposits, but vinegar has an obvious downside: the smell. It can take extra rinsing before coffee tastes normal again.
A coffee maker cleaner tablet is easier for regular maintenance. It is pre-measured, compact, and made to run through the same water path the machine uses to brew coffee.
Start with an empty carafe and filter basket. Remove old grounds and any used filter. Fill the reservoir with clean water, add the cleaner tablet, and let it dissolve.
Run a brew cycle without coffee. Once it finishes, empty and rinse the carafe. Then run one or two full reservoirs of clean water through the machine before brewing coffee.
Clean sooner if the machine brews slowly, the coffee tastes bitter, or the reservoir looks cloudy. If the machine has a clean function, use it. If not, a normal brew cycle without coffee usually does the job.
The goal is not complicated. Keep old residue and hard-water scale from sitting inside the machine that makes your coffee every morning.
